Central Square North Sea Jazz 11|12|13 July 2014
The famous Dutch North Sea Jazz festival commissioned Joost van Bleiswijk and Kiki van Eijk to re-design their 'central square'.
The square, situated in the center of the Ahoy complex in Rotterdam, forms the heart of the festival. A place where visitors can eat, have a drink or wander around the Jazz related shops.
Kiki and Joost got inspired by the big industrial constructions of Rotterdam's port and created a gigantic extra level in the existing 2000 square meter space.
As an addition to the industrial style, there's a big pergola floating above the elevated floor, resulting in a cozy garden-like atmosphere. Graphic lampshades capture the jazz feeling and create the recognizable Joost and Kiki feel to the central square. With a giant chandelier, room dividers, special lamp structures and a floor plan that forms a pixelated graphic, the space has been transformed into a pleasant place to be.
The structure of the square is executed in collaboration with stage design company Look-n-Feel. The design of this space is the first step to a complete metamorphosis, which will find its completion in the upcoming years.
